Attachments and the Fairchild email list

'Hi Folks,

I've heard a concern about virus propagation via the email list. Yahoo
does not provide a scanning service (as far as I can tell.

Viruses spread via email can only take hold if a user runs a virus
infected program. In practice, this means you aren't going to get a
virus via email alone; you might get one if you open a document attached
to the email unless you run a virus scanner on the attachment first.

Therefore, I am disallowing attachments to list emails. This does not
affect embedding images in hypertext email (not a virus threat).

If you have a document that you want to make available to list member,
go to the archive page at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fairchildclub

and click on "files" to upload your document to the file archive. A
notice is automatically sent to all list users that your file is
uploaded.

If you don't have virus protection, I would suggest caution in
downloading documents. Pictures (.jpg or .gif) and Acrobat documents can
be viewed directly by your web browser and present no problem. (Just
click on the file name in the list and you'll see the contents in your
browser window. This will not present a virus threat.

Questions? Post 'em.

'Dan,

I think that this is a GOOD idea. I have a list (using Major Domo) for our EAA Chapter, and we recently got hit with two virus
attacks in three months. It has shaken or confidence and a number of members have withdrawn from the list. I am now going to put a
stop to attachments on our list.

I think that if anyone wants to send an attachment to people, he can ask people to request it from him, then just attach it to their
reply. This should minimize the chance of infection, and any mail with an attachment was directly requested.

Good idea. I hope it works out well.

'To all,

You are right to beware of virus attack via email attachments. Also
be extremely cautious of a second e-mail from the same sender
(possibly headed "No Subject" or "See me Naked"). These were
spreading amongst aviation enthusiasts late last year. The virus
nested in, and spread via, the recipient's Outlook Express address
list. I received it several times and probably only escaped
contamination because the carriers came up on my Web-mail browser
which gave the virus no place to propagate. I know it caused at
least two of my contacts major problems and one of them (with a
Fairchild PT project) I have not heard from since and suspect he is
no longer on-line.
