Hi Eddie,   I don’t think these mounts will fit the V-770..  If I remember correctly, the V-770 mounts are much heavier..  The part number for these is 8058..   Have a great day...    John       From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2016 11:57 AM To: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [fairchildclub] New Ranger mounts.

Hi, my name is Eddie Wells and I live in Wise VA. I was looking online for some info on the Fairchild Ranger 770 and I discovered your group. I have an engine that I bought over 30 years ago and it is still in the crate packed in cosmoline and cellophane. I am missing a starter for it and I am really not sure what to do with it. I might be interested in the engine mounts as I thought I should accumulate as much support stuff for it as I can should I decide to sell it. Thanks

? John,   Is it too late to get in on the Ranger Engine mounts?  I would like a spare set of 4.   Jack Mitchard fighterjack@charter.net (412) 596-5427

'Wow ! An AT-21. Maybe pass along a little history & progress on yours. Beyond wikipedia I know little but noted? McDonnell made 39 in STL. If one our HARM (museum) would really be interested. gTG

Eddie: The V770 uses a different type mount from the 440 series 6 cylinder. They were large forgings, with the attach fittings peculiar to the installation. The rubber sections were likewise installation specific. Should you decide to sell your V770, please keep me in mind, as I am restoring an AT-21, one of the few production aircraft to use  that engine.

' Eddie: I think you should talk with Andrew first. His XP-77 project is probably 25% of the size of my AT-21 and he only needs a single engine and is likely to fly long before me. The XP, due to it's small size, could probably get away with using any dash number V770. The AT, is large and has to have either -11 or -15 engines as they are the high horsepower versions.

Andrew: I'd love to hear about your XP. Which one did you end up with? We can take it to direct email if you want to, as it's not a Fairchild bird.

GTG; Mine is a Bellanca built version. It was about the last one delivered. It served most of it's 9 month operational life at Ellington Field in Houston. Bellanca built 39 of them and McDonnell built 30 according to the information that I have.

Steve: No real progress as we've been bogged down over the last year trying to get both of our homes on the market and moved to where I can have a suitable sized shop. Once I can get the freeze plugs changed on my little tractor and do the timing belt on the car for our 15 year old to learn to drive in, then I will be working on some small stuff in the garage. 1st up is rebuilding the rudders. Both have some structural damage and will need some parts fabricated. I'll make some pictures this next week, assuming some decent weather here.

'Ok, as soon as I can I will uncover the engine and take some pics. It is in a big original shipping crate and the top half is really heavy.  I was told that it was a high horsepower engine because it was for takeoff from aircraft carriers. Thanks, Eddie

'Craig, I suspect that I have pieces of the one that was displayed and
eventually burnt, with a few bit of the one that spun in. Only a few
parts are possibly usable, and unfortunately there's no data plate.
I've heard that there are some NOS spares 'out there'. Love to find
them.

It's not the hardest project I've ever seen. Lots of woodwork, and
I'll have to machine a new undercart.

'The -77 is a long-term project, and will really be a replica. I have a
doctorate in structural engineering, and will certainly NOT use the
'hard mount' for the engine. The aerodynamics will not be altered, and
there will be no other fundamental changes. Must, gosh...a HARD mount
for a V-12? Bad idea.

That said, I do believe that the 770 can be run reliably with a
well-planned installation. Cooling and a good oil circuit are key.

It'll be following an Avia S-199 (along with a 109 for a friend), and
a P-66 (for which I'm negotiating a run of fuselage
extrusions...$$$!).

But sourcing a 770 might leapfrog the 77 past the 66, because woodwork
is a lot more fun than anything else.

'  Andrew: Cool project...You have the remains of the one that spun in down at Eglin then. I always wondered what happened to them. On the P-66 front...you working with a person in the upper midwest on that project?

My AT is in pretty much the same boat as your XP. I've got almost all the metal for it, other than the engine mounts and cowlings and one set of fuel tanks. Tons of wood work and recreating Duramold...

The -77 is a long-term project, and will really be a replica. I have a
doctorate in structural engineering, and will certainly NOT use the
'hard mount' for the engine.
