From what I am reading, the availability of big pieces of spruce is
definitely getting harder. You might go to the North West and buy yourself a
whole tree, then sell what you don't use.

I got my spars (4 each) 30 years ago. Even then they were laminated. 2
layers, then they were milled down. Nothing very new. I have 2 spars from a
UC-61 and they were at least 6 layers thick before milling. I never have
looked to see how many splices there may be length wise.

I don't even want to think about the cost for them at today's prices.

I am looking forward to covering wings and tail this summer.

'At least you guys are not having to deal with a set of spars for a
center section that are about 24 feet in length. My AT-21 has center
section box spars that are more than 4" wide, over 12" deep and just at
24' in length and they taper in two directions. In 1986, I estimated
that the spruce to rebuild the center section was going to be
approaching $10K. When I get close enough to starting the spars, it's
going to require a 53 foot spar table to build them so I don't have to
create some fancy jigs.

Mike and anyone else that has done a PT center section has a pretty good
feel for what I will be going thru.

'The PT center section is a challenge!
The past several years I've been working on a one-piece wing for a 1929 St. Louis Cardinal, which has 38' spars, 1.5" thick and 7" wide, with full routing. The factory spliced to make up the length, I laminated them in two plies as well to get thickness.
One tip for easy to build & level spar table fixtures - buy some surplus warehouse conveyor sections and take out the rollers. Then make a batch of short metal tie rods to bolt the sections together end to end. The conveyor steel frames are sturdy, and the legs are adjustable in height making leveling easy. The sections are 10' long so I have 4 for the Cardinal spars. And you can take the table apart in an hour after you're done!

'Russell: Thanks for the suggestion on the conveyor tables. I'll have to
check on how much dihedral and anhedral there is in the spars before I
get some. It may take going double width to make the dimensions.

Steve: Lots of cylinders....Kinda like 4 PT's in tight formation or a
pair of Mustings in real close....
