Jamie,
5606 is a red mineral based hydraulic fluid use extensively thruout
the General aviation industry. It comes in a blue or red can. Skydrol
is peroxide ester based fluid, and comes in 3 colors, green (Skydrol
3000), purple (Skydrol 500B), and clear (skydrol 1000).
I have never seen any Skydrol in use in GA aircraft under 12,500
Lbs. it's claim to fame is ability to operate in great temp.
extremes, and not burn, so think big jet.
All one must do to change to 5606 A or B is to disassemble, clean,
and reassemble using common AN/MS/NAS/AS "O" rings. It is a very
benign fluid which will not harm paint, or your skin.

Left out the comma, We used Skydrol in out F-4, F-15 and F-16s in the
Airforce. True you can use it in most applications, but when it comes to the
old Expander type rubber, it will turn it soft and swell. End up with locked
brakes.

are you saying the 5606 will soften the rubber? or the Skydrol? they
are 2 way different fluids.'

I'm sure about 5606, I would say that would be true for Skydrol. Thetas what
happened to my bladder brakes on my F-24 before I purchased it. The previous
owner ended up replacing both bladders. The local Spam can mechanics filled
the brake system up with 5606, not knowing any better. I ended up rebuilding
the Master Cyl when I get it back to my shop. The piston seals were swelled
up and soft. They also painted all the brake parts with a two part paint.
Talk about a mess. The DOT 4 soften the paint, became like glue and hung up a
brake. Ended up with a locked right brake, blown tire and almost a fire.

I know the Skydrol will destroy any system that was not designed for
it. It requires special seals and packings, made for the Peroxide
Ester base.
The tubes in your brake system must be natural rubber,because 5606
will desolve natural rubber, 5606 requires neoprene(SP) AN/MS "O"
rings.'

Any of the old vegetable based fluids will work too, back in the 20's-
40's they had a fluid that was basicly "castor oil". But it would
freeze, mix with water and corrode the systems components. Yucky
stuff.
How many aircraft are running the expander tube type brakes? are
there any after market tubes? Where are you getting the seals for the
master cylinders? NAPA? is there a auto master cylinder that
Fairchild used?
I got more questions than I have answers at this point.

Still quite a few of the Fairchilds running around with Expander (Hayes) type
brakes. I like them once you set them up right. As for tubes, new old stock
out of Fresno Airparts along with the Brake Blocks. Stock will someday run
out. Reason #1 to take care of the system with the correct fluid. Joe Denest
hates the Cleveland install on the PTs. Can't blame him, socks on a rooster
comes to mind. Hard to cover up Clevelands on a PT, just not that war time
look.

As for modern brakes. We have many FAA 337s for one time field approval to
convert to Clevelands. You can use the Cessna 310, three puck system, remove
the center pad for less brake. Or you can order the Cessna Ag Truck two puck
system. Also I have been looking at the NuWaco brakes that Cleveland designed
for the UPF-7. They will work on the Fairchilds if you remove the taper shaft
and install the straight axle. Waco has a problem selling the axle to none
Waco users. Still working the issue. I have all the engineering drawings on
file.

As for Master Piston seals, NAPA or any good Auto Parts house. May require a
special order, 1932 Plymouth Brake masters. The seals and springs will work,
will require use of your old Piston, unless you want to cut the new one in
half and then reweld (too long). This has been covered many times in the
Flyer Tech Tips. Go to Yahoo and look at the Tech Tips Index. In the process
of scanning in all the Flyers and will have index that is hyper text linked
to each issue, coming in the next CD Rom effort. Otherwise order paper copy
from John.

A few members have switched out there Auto style and gone to Bodell Masters,
We have the P/Ns for that also. Requires minor bracket rework.
