B17 Liberty Belle

Post by Joshua Shultz »

'A sad day in WW2 aviation.

The restored B17 "Liberty Belle" experienced an engine fire & had to make an
emergency landing. She subsequently burned to the ground, all 7 crewmembers
walked away. I sure hope they restore her some day. By God she lived long enough
to make sure her crew made it out in one piece!

'Engine fires were fairly common on B17s & B24s. More than a few of them met
their demise in the same manner. Still a damned shame though. I wonder if they
were running the superchargers, they are located behind the engines on a B17.
Most every B17 I have ever seen has had the superchargers locked out because
they don't really need them for low altitude cruising, they add significantly to
the maintenance requirements, & they tend to catch fire. Too bad they couldn't
make it back to the airport, the fire crews could have saved the airplane.
