'I have removed the main landing gear struts to replace the Universal Joints.
This makes it a good time to overhaul the struts.
Would like input from experienced members on the subject since I know nothing on
the subject.

'The only time the strut needs rebuilding is if it has corrosion.
I totally rebuilt mine, by replacing the tubing that is used as the barrel. making new pistons and inner tubes that form the upper portion of the strut.
It's an easy do..... see my web, @ http://www.whidbey.com/fairchild-nc19143/id20.htm

'Tom, thank you for the pictures of your restoration they are helpful and
interesting.
?When you replace the Piston tube with a new structural 4130 tube, do you have
to heat treat the finish product?
?what do I use to refill the struts, is it hydraulic fluid like that used in a
tractor or what?
thanks

Re: F-24 Main strut rebuild
'You can use any fluid that is compatible with the rubber seal at the top of the larger cylinder that holds the Spring. Be sure to note that to help the next A&P to know what to service it with.
I did not heat treat the new tube, after welding it is a good practice to have the assembly normalized to relieve the welding stresses.
