'Kindly inform me of the proper jacking point(s) for servicing the tailwheel on my Fairchild 24. I have a couple of photos of the tailwheel assembly, which would clarify two apparent problems:
1. The tailwheel link geometry placing the tailwheel in a reclining, versus upright position. Has the forward clamp rotated? The tailwheel cables are extremely tight.
2. The tailwheel strut seems to be fully compressed. Potential broken spring assembly?
Would like to properly jack tail assembly to remove and investigate tailwheel internals, repair/replace, refill hydr fluid, reinstall.
Would also like to correct tailwheel angle and link/cable geometry. Manuals I have on-hand don't detail any of these issues. Also, frame on either side of the tailwheel strut show evidence of rubbing, and assembly is not 'steerable' on the ground.
Can't figure out how to attach pictures to our posts - advice appreciated in this regard, since the stated problems are evident from the photos...

Re: Fairchild 24W-40 Tailwheel
'Bill,
To jack the tail there's a small pad on the bottom left longeron just in front of attachment point for the tail wheel link. If you can see inside you'll know where it is because several cross compression members converge there so as to not stress the frame when jacking. Also the photos in your album show a completely compressed spring. You normally wouldn't see it so compressed except in a very hard landing then it would rebound (extend) about 3 inches. You must have Fairchild blueprints to tear into this assembly. This is not right, but it is fixable. A CD of blueprints is available through the club. As it looks now, fully compressed like that would be VERY hard on the frame.

Re: Fairchild 24W-40 Tailwheel
'Feedback appreciated, Tom. Jaime and Mike have extended a hand to help resolve my problems. I've grounded the plane until we've fixed all issues. Feel badly that I've flown it with these problems up to now...
