tail wheel problem
'I've just noticed that the inner tube valve fill stem on my PT-26 tail wheel strikes the fork on each revolution. I suppose this could last a little while, but I'd rather not tempt it.
Has anyone else run into this problem, and possibly found a remedy?
The tire is a Goodyear, made in Brazil. Markings on the side are: 10.00 8 LONAS NYLON
I've added a photo of the valve stem problem in the album titled N69167
Suggestions are very welcome.

'Check DESSER Tires. they have a 10.00 sc inner tube with a 90 degree valve stem.

> Charles, Your tailwheel appears to be a Smooth Contour (SC) type. If so, the valve stem is supposed to be bent so as to be retained inside the small compartment it is projecting from and kept in place with the compartment cover. The cover is held in place with machine screws. Bending the valve stem to fit in the compartment creates its own set of problems as it tends to tear the rubber at the stem base which may be the reason it is not in its proper place. The inner tube valve stems for early SC tires were curved to fit into the compartment. Check with Desser Tire. They may have the old style SC inner tubes. Regards, Hugh

Re: tail wheel problem
'Charles,
It appears that your valve stem is vulcanized onto the tube. If that is the case, then this won't be applicable. There are some Brazilian Goodyear tubes that have a brass stem that is held onto the tube via a brass nut. If yours is one of those, you can remove the tube, loosen the nut and rotate the stem 180 degrees. When you re-install the tube, the stem will stick out about 1/2 inch less.

Do not attempt to fly with the valve stem in this condition. The rapid stem contact with the housing will cause the tube to fail suddenly. I had the same problem on one of the main gear tubes on the first flight of my experimental plane, and lost pressure on takeoff. I applied opposite brake and managed to keep it on the runway but could not keep it from noising over. It was an expensive mistake. Since your problem is on the tail wheel ; the plane is unlikely to nose over but the tube failure will be very sudden and usually unexpected. Hope you can correct the problem very quickly.

Re: tail wheel problem
'As someone else mentioned there should be a cover over the stem. In most cases it's "solid" wheel with only a slot opening for the stem and a small curved over held in place by two screws, one at each end. See the parts catalog, page 47.
Yours looks more like it would use a full hub cap. I've seen some wheels like that, but assumed they were Stearman wheels.

Re: tail wheel problem
'Any chance of seeing a head on shot of that tail wheel? I am collecting photographs of tail wheels that are applicable to Fairchild 24's. I'll eventually post those on the site.

Re: tail wheel problem
'Banaire,in Banning,Ca has 10" inner tubes that have an offset valve stem. That is to say the valve stem is not in the center of the tube but, off to the side. Latest price is $115.50. Banaire sells parts for the North American AT-6's. Lots of other neat goodies at this site.
