I heard a rumor that there might be a cd-rom with fairchild wood
blueprints on it -- specificly the outlines for tracing out new
replacement formers. We are missing the old wood from the formers
on top of the fuse. It is a 34 model F-24 c8c. It has shorter top
formers than the later models.
Hugh, did you make new ones for your c8c ????????
We will be finnishing the fuse blasting and priming soon so the formers
are looming near on the horizon of things to do !

Yes, like you I had to make new upper and lower formers and I must tell you up front, it is no walk in the park to do it correctly without detailed blueprint or manufacturing information which does not exist. Another C8C restorer was able to pull a set of the former shapes from his original C8C upper and lower fuselage fairing assemblies which I then used to make new fairing assemblies for my ship. The new fairing assemblies were the first things I built using the fuselage frame as a building jig. The crossing points and angles for new stringers were located by running lines for each stringer from pre-determined fore and aft points. The fairing assemblies were removed after completion and stored at which time I proceeded with cleaning and preserving the fuselage structure and build up of the airplane.. The patterns of the original fairing assemblies were passed along to Roman Mitura in Canada for his C8C project with the intention and
understanding that he would recreate them on a computer format and return the originals to me. I suggest you contact Roman Mitura (613) 254-5421 and determine the status of his computer effort and the patterns.

generate the shape of the formers. Did you use some kind of duplicator
to transfer the curves---- did you invent a clever way to do it ????
My cousin may be going out of town to visit one that is restored so
I am interested in ways it might be done which wouldn't have ANY
impact on the fabric or finnish of a restored plane. Can you give me
some hints from your experiencees ?????????????

we are still learning the proper names for all the faircild's parts
were you calling the fuselage formers fairings ? Or are the fairings
the metal covered wood parts on the landing gear struts ??????
I'm not sure what stuff is called on this thing yet !

The bulkhead shapes were taken from bare upper and lower factory built C8C fuselage fairing assemblies by transferring their outlines onto cardboard held in place inside the fairing assemblies. The fairing assemblies were uncovered and off the fuselage at this time. This first set of rough patterns were refined through several iterations to produce the finalized shapes used to craft new upper and lower fairing assemblies.
In the second part, you asked about the fairings? When I talk about fuselage fairings, I am referring to the complex upper and lower wood structures consisting primarily of the afore mentioned bulkheads and stringers which define the shape of the fuselage. Hope this helps.
