Power surge. Has this happened to you with the Ranger 440
'I am getting a power surge about 6 secends into the takeoff. Static rpm 2100 and mag checks good. Fuel is full on both tanks and fuel psi is stable on 5 and dosnt surge when the engine does. What happened.... I was departing on downwind and the engine rolled back to 1800rpm and went rough. I pitched back and landed. during the 20 seconds it was rough I checked mags and roughness continued and then I pulled the mixture 1/2 way back and nothing so I pushed it in and by then it stopped and I was on final.
After landing I ran it up again and got the drop but not roughness. I checked plug connections and airfilter and all is well. I went back out and ran it down the runway after a static check of about a min and it rolled back again so I aborted. This continued....
Anybody have a guess or has had this happened. I am about to break into the plane and start from scratch but was hoping for insight. Fuel was fresh and full as the plane is always flown. The engine has 125 smoh.

'What type aircraft? What was the OAT at the time? Where are you located? It is possible that you may have experienced carb icing. Did you pull the carb heat on?

'Super thought but icing conditions did not exist. My cub ices up around 60 degrees and 50% humidity and I am cautious of it but as you know, It can happen anytime when the conditions are met.... It was cold but clear with 35% humidity.. Thanks! Michael

'I had a problem with our PT-19 sort of like yours. I completed a major overhaul of the engine about 18 hours prior to this starting. Engine operation was normal in every way.
Takeoff full power everything normal, power reduction to 2200, the engine started to run rough, advance back to full power, still rough. Reduce power back to 1500 or less, engine smoothed out, ran normal, back to cruse power rough.
I thought it must be mag related problem, went through both mags again, no
change, then wires, then plugs, then replaced mags from another Ranger, no change.
Carb adjustment was checked and was sure carb was OK, had cleaned and checked needle/seat, float, checked all AD's complied with,and replaced all gaskets at engine major.
Took 2 or 3 other A/P's up to show them problem, No one had a better idea.
Decided to remove and go through carb again.
Problem found when removal of carb was started, scat hose was 2 ply, inner part was loose and would fold down and act as a choke.. Hose had been replaced at overhaul.
Had about 4 months of spare time fun with this.

I do not have an engine manual(yet) but this sounds like the problem . I just ran it up and down the runway and it it worked fine. Did a last full power run up and presto, it came back. Engine backs off to about 1800 rpm. Until I pull the throttle back to the approx 1800rpm position it is rough. So when it smooths out I pushed it back up and lost power again. The next time, I pulled the throttle back till it smoothed out and held it for 10 seconds and pushed it back up and I got about 10 seconds of full power. It was like the carb would fill back up. So based on what you said I think you have nailed it. What scat hose where??

I'm sure I am missing something here. The scat hose connected to the carb. air box? That scat hose could only affect the engine when in carb. heat mode as with carb. heat off the carb. air comes thru the filter/not thru the scat hose. When running with carb. heat off you could completely flatten the scat hose with no effect to the engine.
Sounds possible for the float level to be too low or gas flow rate slowed by ???

Problem found when removal of carb was started, scat hose was 2 ply, inner part was loose and would fold down and act as a choke.. Hose had been replaced at overhaul.
Had about 4 months of spare time fun with this.

Super thought but icing conditions did not exist. My cub ices up around 60 degrees and 50% humidity and I am cautious of it but as you know, It can happen anytime when the conditions are met.... It was cold but clear with 35% humidity.. Thanks! Michael

I am getting a power surge about 6 secends into the takeoff. Static rpm 2100 and mag checks good. Fuel is full on both tanks and fuel psi is stable on 5 and dosnt surge when the engine does. What happened.... I was departing on downwind and the engine rolled back to 1800rpm and went rough. I pitched back and landed. during the 20 seconds it was rough I checked mags and roughness continued and then I pulled the mixture 1/2 way back and nothing so I pushed it in and by then it stopped and I was on final.
After landing I ran it up again and got the drop but not roughness. I checked plug connections and airfilter and all is well. I went back out and ran it down the runway after a static check of about a min and it rolled back again so I aborted. This continued... .
Anybody have a guess or has had this happened. I am about to break into the plane and start from scratch but was hoping for insight. Fuel was fresh and full as the plane is always flown. The engine has 125 smoh.

'This sounds a lot like the symptom you'd get if you have a Marvel
Schleber carb and the venturi AD hasn't been properly complied with. The
AD requires the two part venturi be replaced with a single part unit.
The two halves apparently can get askew, choking the carb throat and
causing an over-rich mixture. Pulling a plug may show a sooted up tip.
Cliff McClinney bought the farm in his PT 26 from this; apparently the
logged AD compliance never happened. So be careful.

'THANKS It is a Stromburg carb but I will review the ADs..

I do not have an engine manual(yet) but this sounds like the problem . I just ran it up and down the runway and it it worked fine. Did a last full power run up and presto, it came back. Engine backs off to about 1800 rpm. Until I pull the throttle back to the approx 1800rpm position it is rough. So when it smooths out I pushed it back up and lost power again. The next time, I pulled the throttle back till it smoothed out and held it for 10 seconds and pushed it back up and I got about 10 seconds of full power. It was like the carb would fill back up. So based on what you said I think you have nailed it. What scat hose where??
