New Radio?

'I am look to by a new set of electronics for my F-24. I am not out for a fancy set. I got over the need for bells & whistles a long time ago. If I thought I could get away with it, I would still be using my Narco VHT-2. It was legal, the last time that I used it. I would use a Mk 12D and AT-150 if I know it would fit. I don't have the panel in place at present, so that is why I am asking.

I am sure that I need something that is fairly short. I would like it to go in with little or no modification to the panel. Just something to get me into the occasional TCA. A Comm/Nav with separate Nav head, and a transponder with encoder. I would use an audio panel only to help fill up space.

I would like something that would fit into the top center of an original panel, and have the Nav head mounted below and centered on the panel.

Make and model numbers would be fine. I can go on-line to get the dimensions, performance numbers, weight and cost.

First, do you have an F-24 with the hump instrument panel? That is what
mine is in a 1940 F-24W40. When I first got the airplane (in 1969), I used a
VHT-3 (same dimensions as a VHT-2). When I was forced to go to a 360 channel,
I installed a Narco Mark 12B in the same panel opening with the omni head
mounted below it.

I went from there to solid state with a Narco COM 11and mounted a Cessna 300
transponder on top of it in the same panel opening. I mounted the encoder
on a side panel. As long as the COM 11 is working and does not need repairs,
it is grandfathered in under the 720-channel rules. If it craps out, I plan
to install a Michel MX11R replacement which uses
the same wiring harness and simply plugs into the COM 11 tray. It costs
$835.

I do not have any navigational equipment now, but have flown pretty much
wherever I want to go using contact flying. If you need navigation, you can
always invest in a low priced handheld GPS.

As I said before, this installation fits in the hump on the panel. But a
word of caution. Install them before you put the top panel cover and
windshield in place.

I have an old an old Mk 12B, but I am not sure that I want the use it. I was serviceable when I removed it from a Bellanca. Getting parts, should it break, would probably be a bear.

I am thinking about going on line and checking with some of the retailers and see what may tickle my fancy. If I need to go with separate Comm and Nav chassis and they are small enough, I can do that. The only place that I even need a radio Nav and transponder, would be Las Vegas. I otherwise use a TPX-720, the little blue brick.

The beauty of my situation, I am in no rush at all. If I can get the old girl back in the air within 2 years, I will be doing great. 3 years may be more realistic.

'We are installing an ICOM 200(?) Nav/comm in N81229. It is light weight, has
a built-in intercom and flip/flop frequency capability. Don't know that we
need much more than that: we are also installing our 196 GPS that will
provide backup instrumentation if any have looked at its capabilities.
WE removed 16 pounds of EDO AIRE "stuff" and the new installation will
probably be 6 pounds.
