Fuel Valves

Post by rangerrobertmn »

'Has anyone come up with a replacement for the Fairchild 24 Fuel
valves. Mine is the earlier version, with the valves at the wing
root. My valves have started sticking a lot.

Any suggestions?

'Have you tried a fuel lubricant. I haven't had any problems with my F-24,
but I had a couple others with sticking hard to move valves. Disassemble,
put a light coat on the valve faces, reassemble.
My FBO had it and it just took a dab. I couldn't find it in Spruce or Wicks
though.

'Called "fuel lube" or fuel seal" costs about $25 a pint can. Bum some off your friendly FBO as just a dab will do you for a long time.

'Bob,
Make sure your valves are not leaking first. Check behind the panels.
If not, the valve has probably not had a chance to galled yet. It
probably can be saved. The littlest dab of Fuel Lube on the cone is
enough. Then, even if you follow up by wiping the cone down with a
clean rag, you still have more than enough.
Fuel Lube does not dissolve in gasoline.
I know of one attempt to remedy a sticky valve which was also weeping.
To generous amount of lube was used. I think in an attempt to stop
the weep. After half a dozen operations or so, the engine stumbled
under takeoff power. .Scary but no broken necks. The Lube had migrated
into the cone flow through port, and restricted fuel flow to the
engine by 50%. Maybe after a beer sometime I'll tell you who that
yahoo was.

'Thanks for everyone's input. I repaired both valves by opening them
and putting on a dab of 'fuel lube'. They had just barely started to
gall. Hope they last. I will certainly repair them sooner in the
future, rather than let them get 'hard to turn'.
