Jack & Heinz attitude gyro

Post by David Stroud »

'Does anyone have any experience bench testing the Jack & Heinz gyro?
Mine seems locked in the "caged" postion ( little flag up and knob won't
turn) yet application of some suction provides nothing.

Failing this info, how does it work in the plane? Start the engine, the
venturi sucks because of prop wash, then if you shut the engine down
would you hear the gyro spinning down? Thanks.

'David,

I have several "Sperry" artifical horizons here, they are probably
similar. To uncage, normally you would need to pull and turn. If
nothing happens it might be corroded. The gyro will turn regardless of
caged or not.

Just to run the engine on the ground will not create enough vacuum to
run the gyro properly. It needs flying speed.

You can connect a vacuum cleaner to the instrument for bench testing.

I hope that helps.

Best regards

'Thanks for the note, Karl. The vacuum cleaner trick was good enough to spool
things up and the cage knob gear was temporarily locked up where it enters
the case. The device seems to work ok now on the bench but the "caged"
flag won't go away. I'm thinking it should go away on shutdown?

If I sat in a box for 60 years, I'd be a bit stiff too I guess. The little plastic
plugs on the back were brittle as hell and had to get drilled out.

As I remember the flag is mechanical and will only go away when the knob is
turned. Yes the gyro may turn but the horizon will remain stationary unless
the unit is un caged.
