Re: Engine for Old Rhinebeck - Questions

Post by Thekortas@aol.com »

'Had a great opportunity to see Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck, NY last
Saturday. They have a very nice '37 Model 24 / C8F that needs an engine.
Their info says that it had a 150 HP Ranger 6-390-D3 in it from the factory. I
have a 200 HP Ranger runout that I am willing to give them (they know it will
need a complete overhaul) but I was wondering what anyone might be able to offer
in the way of comment about the differences between the two engines (other
than the obvious horsepower difference and the accessories ie: carb etc.), Does
anyone know of an angine swap that has been done to fit the larger engine
into a C8F ? Should they even bother trying?
For those of you who haven't been there or heard much about the place they
have a nice website that lists a lot of info about what they are and what they
do as well as their list of aircraft, engines, motorcycles, vehicles, etc. I
think it is something like: www.Oldrhinebeckaerodrome.com or something.
You'll find it if this isn't it and you do a search. Anyway, the bug bit me and I
really want to try and help them get the Fairchild flying by donating the
Ranger if it might work out. So.....anything you can offer will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Steve Korta

I heard that the Sopwith Camel crashed. Apparently, the pilot shouldn't
have been flying it, and he wasn't qualified to fly a rotary.
I haven't heard any convincing news that the new board is doing their
job very well. It seems they have fired a lot of old volunteers and
nothing is maintained including the hangers, aircraft and so on. There's
rumors that the airfield is a gold mine in terms of real estate and they
might consider selling the land to make lots for multi-million dollar
homes??? Damm shame!

'You know, I've heard the rumors too. But I also saw a lot of people pouring
their hearts out to get the aircraft and facilities ready for this weekends
opening airshow. It is clear that the old gang did a lot to build the place up.
And, maybe the new group is doing it in a different way, but, in the meantime
if they can get another Fairchild back in the air it can only be a good thing.
Anyone have any info on the engine question I asked?
Thanks again.
Steve

'Steve,
The 6-390 engine has a taper shaft, not splined as on
the 175 and 200. Also The cylinder bores are smaller,
4.0 inch vs. 4.125 inch on the 175 and 200. 6-440
cylinders will not fit on the crankcase.
