I highly recommend that you clearly mark the Brake Master area and gear
struts with what type fluid is used.

Also recommend that you make a Oil Services List, put in the Log book where
it is noticable.

I continuly have to question customer aircraft (call the previous owner or
restorer) as to what the previous service was. It is hard to tell between
DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5, Motorcycle Strut Oil, and 5606 after it has been in
service, it becomes dirty and hard to tell the difference.

Sometimes I have to resort to the good ole taste test. That gets old.

parts straight from NAPA. I still have one of the kits in the shop. I
destroyed one of the dust boots, and needed to buy another kit.
It really bothered me to see that the expander tube would be swelling up
after more than a year or so. It swelled enough to almost lock up that
wheel. I wonder if it had anything to do with the expander tube being out
of service for 30 years or more?

'No. The type of fluid will affect it. Say for
example at some time, someone may have serviced the
brakes with 5606 hydraulic oil. Petroleum will ruin
the expander tube for sure. DOT 3 will do it also but
over a longer period of time when you don't notice it.
We replaced an expander tube for the same problem -
the DOT 3 got to the rubber causing the expander tube
to lock up the brake. We replaced the tube, the seals
in the master cylinder, flushed everything with
alcohol and reserviced with DOT 5. It's been fine
ever since.
