'Lads my F24 ( in need of full restoration ) arrived today and I can't say how please I am
to have it. The right wing is shot as was indicated by the seller but the fuselage is in great
shape. One thing I noticed was that someone else had his hand in some restoration earlier
and contrary to what I saw on Tom Downey's site, the fuselage stringers at least on the upper
fuselage area in the turtle deck area are not wood, but 6061 T6 round aluminum, 1/2" .035 tube.
We didn't get a chance to examine the lower stringers etc and maybe they are the same way.
Has anyone else seen or heard of round aluminum stringers being used?
On another note, I cannot believe the amount of paperwork that came with the airplane. I'm
embarassed at the way I take care of paperwork even around the house after examining the
trail of crumbs these owners left behind. Several owners contributed to a short list of owners
since '41 even including interesting anecdotes about the sale price of the plane from various
owners to the next. There's even the documentation decertifying the airplane from the US and
recertifying it up in Canada. It was a UC61 at one time having done some military duty.
As a side note to John Berendt..I had no idea of how much paperwork would come with the
plane and in fact just about every drawing, parts list, POH type things all came with it in
duplicate. I appreciate your reply earlier about my manuals question which you sent directly to
me and will send a cheque shortly to join the Fairchild Club.

'Hello David-
Congradulations! It's a Fairchild 24! I personally
never heard of aluminum stringers, but anything is
possible out there! Are there any 337 forms indicating
the conversion from wood?
You say it was a UC-61, do you know the US Army
Airforce serial number? Does your new plane have cable
fuel and mixture controls or the UC-61 type levers and
pullies?
once again, congradulations to the new dad!

Re: F24 fuselage stringers
'Thanks for the congrats, Jim. I haven't gotten into the books long
enough to find the mod for the aluminum stringers. We did check today and
it looks as if we have aluminum stringers all round the fuselage though.
It took most of the day to get the engine off and as the weather's been real
good, we didn't take any time for casual exploring. For the fuel and mixture, there
is a fine array of levers built into the top/rear of the engine mount activated by clevis
rod ends coming thru the firewall near the top. No pullies FWF though. I was surprise
how robust the engine mount is built.
There is a copy of a form in the pile of documentation showing that the Pure Oil
Company of Chicago applied for registration of this aircraft in Mar 22, 1945
and it appears to be some kind of dual registration...24w-41A and AAF UC-61A
serial number 373 and AAF no 43-14409.

Re: F24 fuselage stringers
'Hi David!
Its like Christmas! The more you dig the more you
learn about the plane and how great it is to own a
F24.
My partner Bob and I purchased a bunch of US Army
Airforce surplus UC-61 parts, a majority of them are
for the A model, (Warner F24) When you get to
rebuilding, let me know and I will see if we can help!
These are really great aircraft! Can't wait to get
ours up and going! With the hours we can dedicate,
hopefully we can fly in about 2 years
Post pictures on the web site! I created a UC-61
folder for anyone with pictures and info on the UC-61
versions of the F-24.
Does your plane still have the quick release doors?
how about the 3 recognition lights in the belly?
let me know, keep in touch

Re: F24 fuselage stringers
'Dave: I've also never heard of aluminum stringers in an F-24 or UC-
61, so it's probably something that was done during an earlier
recover job and perhaps not a bad idea. I've spent lots of quality
time with my stringers and have found them to be exceedingly ornate,
complex peices that are easily distorted or otherwise moved out of
shape, which could compromise the exterior appearance of the
airplane. If you're happy with the aluminum and don't have to have a
100% original finished product, you may want to consider keeping
them.
Congratulations on the project, it's a very enjoyable endeavor made
all the better by the club and this web board.
Best Wishes,
Brad Donner'

Re: F24 fuselage stringers
'Early Christmas indeed. Thanks for the lead on the spare parts. No quick release
doors and I don't see the three lights under the belly either. I think the plane was
pretty much demilitarized after WW2 and then flipped from owner to owner since.
I'm not that sharp when it comes to web sites etc. but have some previous escapades
of mine posted here on this free Yahoo site as well as a couple of new pics of us
unloading the F24 on Monday. Go here: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos
and click on "Fairchild 24". If you click on "Fairchild", you'll see a few pics of my other
project, the Fairchild 51. It'll go on hold till the 24 is flying.
By way of introduction, we fly out of Kars Rideau Valley Airpark about 15NM South
of CYOW..Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. About 20 of us own shares in a real nice grass
strip about 3,000' x 250'. We host fly-ins during the year at our strip and if you click
on the Kars 'n' Planes folder you'll see some nice examples of planes that fly in. A
regular plane that flys in is an all original Mk X1V Spitfire owned by local high tech
guru Michael Potter ( Cognos ).
I'm a member of the local EAA chapter 245 and President of our RAA chapter.
